Connected to the Northwest Coast region of BC, the totem pole is a symbol that represents cultural beliefs, legends, and specific events. The totems can be a welcome sign to a village or community. For my installation, the totem represents the lost and those who remain missing, and the events that lead to their disappearance.
This totem is a beacon to those who cannot find their way. Over 150,000 Indigenous children went to residential schools and more than half of them never came home to their families. This totem symbolizes an uprising, a change of education, and justice for survivors and their families. Can we forgive the mistakes of the past and heal? The Pope has apologized, but we want real action! We want ReconciliACTION!
